How to Pack Light for Family Travel: Essentials Only

Packing light with kids—impossible? Not anymore! Learn how to travel with just the essentials using smart packing hacks, from maximizing diaper bags to shipping baby gear ahead. Get the best tips for stress-free family travel at Kidgo!

 TL;DR Version:

  • Use the diaper bag: Airlines allow one per child under 2—maximize space with essentials.
  • Ship or buy diapers & formula: Save luggage space by ordering ahead or buying at your destination.
  • Do laundry: Check for laundry access and use laundry sheets for efficiency.
  • Plan outfits: Pre-plan outfits to avoid mismatches and overpacking.
  • Prioritize essentials: Bring only what’s truly necessary—kids need less than we think!

Love it or hate it, there’s no denying the enticing prices of the budget airlines. Sometimes, in this economy, a parent’s gotta do what a parent’s gotta do. And is it really a budget airline experience if you don’t at least try to cram everything into your personal item? I think not. But… it is in fact possible! In fact, my family has taken several long weekend trips (even up to a week) with just a few personal items for me, my husband, my baby and my toddler – here’s how.

Tip 1: Use the Diaper Bag

If you are traveling with kids under 2, airlines allow you to bring a diaper bag – per child. I always pack the essentials in here: diapers and wipes of course, but also snacks, a few changes of clothes, and toys. You’d be surprised how much you can fit in a good sized diaper bag. If you’re traveling with multiple parents and multiple kids under 2, you can easily bring multiple diaper bags. Stuff that puppy to the brim!

Tip 2: Ship or Buy Diapers and Formula

I rarely, if ever, pack diapers, wipes, and formula. Sure, it takes some research and upfront legwork to ensure the right stuff for your kid is available wherever you’re going. But in general, this is such a space-saver! I typically Prime the stuff if I can, else, I’ll head to a grocery store right when we get to our destination.

Tip 3: Do Laundry

Again, this one requires some up front legwork, but check to see if there’s laundry services where you’re going! Lots of vacation rentals have laundry and of course, some hotels offer it at a charge. Pro tip: use laundry sheets if the place you’re going doesn’t provide soap! They are a super efficient way to pack and take care of the planet.

Tip 4: Plan Their Outfits – and Yours

Though it can seem silly, I plan my kids’ outfits in advance and pack shirts and bottoms together. It stinks to have non-matching items when you get to your destination – and this certainly helps that. Plus, you’ll also have a visual of what you’re bringing if you set it all out.

Tip 5: Decide Necessity versus Want

This is a toughie. When packing, decide whether the item you’re bringing it really essential for your travels or if it is just a nice-to-have. Does your 5-year-old need to bring the 4th stuffed animal? How many baby blankets do you need to bring for your newborn? Is the giant plastic toy really a value add for your toddler? We often need less than we think.

Packing light, especially with kids, is not an easy feat! But hopefully, with these tips, it’ll get a little easier for you.
