Hi! I'm Sameer, a new dad and founder of Kidzovo, a video-based interactive learning platform that combines high-quality videos with an AI buddy that engages kids through interactive learning games. Think YouTube's fun factor meets personal tutor effectiveness.
After several family trips, we've discovered some game-changing tips that transformed our vacations from survival missions into genuinely joyful experiences. Here's what we've learned along the way.
The biggest mindset shift? Accepting that family travel is completely different from couple travel—and that's perfectly okay.
On our first trip with our daughter, my wife and I felt like we were working harder than we did at home. But watching her experience a pool for the first time? Pure magic. As she's grown, the work has decreased, but we've learned to plan around nap times, meal schedules, and age-appropriate activities.
Once you embrace this reality instead of fighting it, you're already halfway to vacation success.
My wife's motto: "If you fail to plan, you plan to fail." Here's our emergency prep checklist:
This groundwork lets you actually relax once you arrive.
Flights: We stick to shorter, direct routes for now (longer flights are on our "when she's older" list). When our daughter was tiny, bassinet seats at the front were lifesavers—though be prepared for a baby chorus if multiple families choose the same strategy! Flight timing can make or break your trip's start, so plan around your child's schedule, not just your convenience.
Accommodations: Since I'm writing for Kidgo, I wouldn’t miss an opportunity to shout out to the amazing work that they’re doing to help parents discover great family friendly stays. A family friendly hotel where the staff is equipped to handle the usual requests from parents makes it so much easier for the parents. We also usually email the hotel beforehand and ask them for a crib & a high chair.
Baby Gear: Familiar Comfort in New Places
We made sure our daughter was comfortable with her stroller, carrier, and car seat before traveling. For our first big trip, we brought her compact travel stroller and baby carrier—the stroller for smooth surfaces, the carrier for when Bali's roads got bumpy.
Pro tip: Research baby gear rental options at your destination. You might not need to pack everything.
Fellow parents weren't kidding—snacks really are the travel silver bullet. Our arsenal has evolved from fruit purees and crunchies to crackers and beyond, always prioritizing healthy options that travel well. Also look for fresh fruits available at the destination to introduce variety, without needing to pack a lot. When all else fails, yoghurt really works well for us and is something that most kids tend to love.
The golden rule? Pack more than you think you'll need. Snacks have prevented countless meltdowns..
We bring a strategic mix of toys: beloved favorites for comfort plus a few new surprises for excitement. Our daughter's travel companions have graduated from rattles and soft toys to books, balls, and interactive activities.
Beyond packing entertainment, we make sure to plan activities she genuinely enjoys—pool time, beach adventures, visits to local parks, and other child-friendly attractions in the area. These planned activities become the highlights of our trips and give us all something to look forward to.
Always build in buffer days for spontaneous discoveries or backup plans when activities don't go as expected.
This might be controversial, but for flights and long car rides, quality screen time is a parent's best friend. Audio stories and kid-friendly music work great too.
For younger kids, Ms. Rachel is fantastic. For preschoolers (bias alert!), Kidzovo offers educational engagement that goes beyond passive watching—our owl mascot, Ovo, turns video watching into interactive learning along with activities, coloring sheets, and puzzles.
For older kids, a little time playing MarioKart or other kid-friendly games on the Nintendo Switch will keep everyone sane.
The best family vacation moments often happen off-script. Sometimes the planned museum visit becomes a spontaneous park adventure chasing birds, or ice cream becomes the main event instead of that fancy dinner.
Finding the balance between following your child's lead and sticking to plans? That's where the magic happens.
We built Kidzovo for parents who refuse to compromise. After watching kids develop concerning relationships with technology, we created something different. Something that will provide a safe, encouraging & knowledgable presence to kids while they watch their favorite videos even when we’re not around. Over 1,000 hours of curated content from top creators like Vooks, SciShow Kids, and Numberock, enhanced by our AI owl, Ovo who ensures kids comprehend, retain, and learn with interactive learning activities. Everything that the owl says is pre-vetted by teachers & parents before it goes live on the platform.
If screen time guilt is real for you, or your kids quickly get bored of the learning apps you buy for them, Kidzovo might be the solution you've been looking for.
